Discover Arizona’s Great Outdoors in Chandler

by James Lee

Chandler was named a “Playful Park USA” community for 11 consecutive years by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to parks and recreation advocacy. Chandler received the honor for providing recreation and park opportunities for children and families including 60 parks to choose from.

Veteran Oasis Park

Veteran Oasis Park is a 113-acre desertscape surrounded by wetlands that has a playground, areas for fishing and hiking trails. The City of Chandler Environmental Education Center (EEC), the entranceway to Veteran Oasis Park, hosts educational programs and sporting activities for children and adults alike. If you have a green thumb or an interest in developing one, the Demonstration Garden teaches volunteers how to sustain and maintain the garden on the premises.

Tumbleweed Regional Park

Chandler is also home to Tumbleweed Regional Park which houses the Tumbleweed Regional Center. The center sprawls over 62,000 square feet and has a gymnasium, fitness center, indoor track, and two racquetball courts. The center also hosts themed parks with interactive exhibits such as The Butterfly Garden. The Butterfly Garden is an open air butterfly garden with over 100 plant and tree species that support the lifecycle of butterflies.

Playtopia, which is also part of Tumbleweed Park, is a 2.5-acre playground and picnic area that has themed play zones that are crafted around different themes. Farm Land offers slides, bridges and climbing gyms crafted around the farming theme. City Land offers a playful urbanscape with paved streets lined lampposts and streetlights that are perfect for children’s bikes and tricycles. Critter Land gives kids an opportunity to hunt for dinosaur bones or walk through giant tortoise shells. Playtopia also offers picnic areas, horseshoe pits, and sand volleyball.

Paseo Vista Regional Park

The Paseo Vista Regional Park was once a landfill until the city decided to convert the park into the recreation area it is today. It includes a dog park, children’s play areas, and areas for disc golf and archery. Many of the construction materials for the park were recycled for its renovation.

There really is no shortage of activities to choose from in Chandler. And there are activities for every member of the family and every age group to enjoy.
